Spread betting opportunities : Financial market update

An extremely volatile day on Wall Street saw the major equity indices lose close to 3% each with the bellwether S&P 500 index trailing the Dow and Nasdaq composite.

At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 360.92 points, shedding 2.64% on the day to finish at 13300.02. The Standard and Poor’s index of 500 leading stocks was 2.94% lower, dropping 44.65 to close the day at 1475.62. The Nasdaq Composite index finished at 2748.76, having declined by 76.42 points (2.7%).

As would be expected, European stock markets suffered a similar fate to their US counterparts. In London, the Footsie closed the session deep in the red following the early triple digit decline on Wall Street. By the end of a very volatile last hour, the FTSE 100 had dropped by 1.39% to finish the day at 6385.1—89.8 points lower.
