Equities continued their roller coaster moves, with the sharp decline on Monday followed by an equally sharp rally on Tuesday!
The major US equity indices all rallied strongly, with the Dow leading the way higher. By the closing bell, the Dow had added 215 spreadbetting points to finish the day at 12958.44—a gain of 1.69%. The Nasdaq Composite index rallied 1.57% (+39.81) to close at 2580.8. The S&P 500 index finished at 1428.23 for a gain of 1.49%—21.01 points.
The strong showing in the early hours on Wall Street inspired a late surge in the Footsie but that was not enough to prevent the index from recording another deficit following Monday’s sharp decline. Nevertheless, it enabled the index to pare back initial triple-digit losses. By the close, the FTSE 100 was down 39.8 points (-0.64%) to finish at 6140.7 on Tuesday. Elsewhere, the FTSE 250 index lost 1.44% and the techMARK index was down 1.06%.
