Spread betting opportunities : Financial market update
Wall Street was closed on Thursday for Thanksgiving holiday so it was left to London to lead the global equity markets. Investors on this side of the Atlantic also appeared to be in celebratory mood as the FTSE 100 rallied by 1.39% to finish the day at 6155.30 - 84.4 spread-betting points higher than the previous close. The FTSE 250 was also strongly higher, gaining 1% for the session. But the leader for the day was the index of technology stocks - techMARK index, which finished the day 1.66% higher. The rally in London was led by drug stocks such as AstraZeneca which finished the day at 2,231.00p, up 6.59%. Blue chip stocks also received a boost from the news of a bid for Kelda, the water company. That led to a strong performance by the wider utility sector. The loser board was dominated by stocks in the mining sector, where Xstrata (XTA) and Xstrata (XTA) and Antofagasta ANTO) finished down 2.71% and 2.59% respectively.
