Spread betting opportunities : Financial market update


After treading water for most of the day, the leading US equity indices moved lower late on Wednesday afternoon. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost just over 76 points to end the day at 13231.01. Likewise, the S&P 500 index was 10.47 points off, to close at 1470.58. The tech heavy Nasdaq Composite index was once again the weakest of the three major indices, dropping by 29.33 points (1.1%) to close at 2644.32 for the day.

Mining stocks led the London market higher following strong gains in commodity prices. Among the blue chip stocks, Kazakhmys was a notable riser, moving over 7% higher. On the down side, banks again topped the laggard board, with Northern Rock losing over 8% for the session.

Overall, the FTSE 100 index was 1.1% higher at 6432.1, a move of 69.7 spredbetting points. Other leading indices in the London market posted decent gains. The FTSE 250 moved 1.38% higher to close at 11,070.90 and the techMARK index rose 0.1% to finish at 1,545.03.
