The increased level of volatility continues to stalk the equity markets as concerns about the fallout from the credit crisis undermine growth expectations and rising inflation undermine the ability of central banks to cut interest rates. The Dow Jones had another down day despite initially gaining almost 120 points earlier in the trading session. The index reached an intraday high of 13162.64 before closing down 55.19 spread betting points at 12987.55. The S&P 500 index lost 1%, closing down 14.52 points at 1439.18. The main laggard was the Nasdaq Composite index which lost 1.67% on Monday, closing at 2584.13—down 43.81 points for the day. The Footsie closed Monday with modest gains on the back of a rebound in banking stocks after the sell-off seen in the sector last week. Shares in the mining sector bucked the uptrend, with the likes of Antofagasta, Kazakhmys and Vedanta Resources all falling by over 5% for the day. Overall, the FTSE 100 added 33 spredbetting points to finish at 6337.9.
